The Ohaus MB35 has been discontinued by Ohaus and replaced with the OHAUS MB90. All information displayed herein is for people researching the specifications on the MB35.
Ohaus MB35 moisture analyzer features a maximum sample capacity of 35g, with a readability of 0.002 grams and repeatability to 0.02% for samples 10 grams or greater. The intuitive software establishes a simple user interface with simple 3 key navigation for easy setup. The MB35 offers a straight forward one step testing procedure. The moisture balance LCD display shows % moisture, actual weight, and actual temperature and test time.
Ohaus MB35 is Ohaus' mid range moisture balance offers limited features compared to the Ohaus MB45. Fast halogen element provides uniform infrared heating up to 160ºC in less than 1 minute. Analytical performance, with a readability of 2 mg, 0.05% moisture and 35 gram capacity. The Ohaus MB35 moisture analyzer display shows % moisture, time, temperature, weight and none of the advance features of the Ohaus MB45 moisture balance.
Operating the MB35 moisture analyzer is easy once the moisture balance parameters have been set, moisture determinations can be made very simply. There are three simple steps to perform:
Setting the drying temperature (50°C to 160°C in 5° increments.)
Setting the drying time (Automatic or Timed)
Gathering and preparing the sample. (Keep in mind the importance of attaining a proper composite sample that is homogeneous and the even distribution of the sample on the moisture pan. No mounds or piles.)
If you already own the Ohaus MB35 water content analyzer and you are looking for the consumable moisture pans you can purchase a box of 500 aluminum moisture pans for an extremely low price compared to what Ohaus charges for these moisture pans if you bought them from Ohaus Corporation directly.
We also sell moisture balance filter pads used to distribute the heat better, prevents skinning over (this is when bubbles form). Filter pads are really a must when testing samples containing large amounts of sugary substances since they tend to caramelize. To prevent this ensure that a thin and uniform layer is applied covered with a glass fiber filter and a moderate temperature selected to improve accurate and moisture content readings.
For test samples that are pasty or contain fat or substances that melt the use of a glass fiber filter is advantageous to increase the surface area of the sample. In addition, moisture analysis of substances which form crusts (e.g. glucose syrup) or pasty substances (e.g. butter) can be considerably improved by mixing with quartz sand. You can purchase a box of 200 filter pads or buy a case of 4000 filter pads to save even more money.
Many people call us looking for the absolute best value Precision Weighing Balances can offer in a moisture balance for simple moisture determination applications like sludge wastewater applications and the answer again and again is the A&D ML-50. When price is the #1 factor and you want a quality moisture determination instrument to 1% moisture content determination then you should review the ML50 moisture balance HERE.
Before you buy any moisture balance be sure to see the Sartorius MA37 moisture analyzer.
The Sartorius MA37 heating element is metal tubular and this provides more of an oven effect providing intense heat throughout the complete heating chamber thus allowing better drying to all sides of the sample (top, bottom and sides). Although the metal tubular design isn't the fastest design for drying to run the percent moisture test since metal tubular takes longer to heat up over a halogen bulb we feel it is the best method to determine moisture.

We always recommend people purchase moisture
pans that are oil free Aluminum and provide even
temperature across the pan. If you ever need
additional weighing pans we sell them in bulk, 500 pans to a case.
Some people believe that they can reuse the pans but
this is never recommended. Although you might
clean off the pan the stains leave material from your
last test or even moisture when you attempted to clean
the pan. Others believe they can use a piece
of aluminum foil paper but this isn't always smooth
and creates crinkles and thus uneven drying.
Always, always, always use a new moisture pan for
each test.
Glass
fiber pads distribute the heat better, prevents
skinning over (this is when bubbles form).
The fiber pads are binder-free borosilicate glass
fiber and therefore contain no binders (no foreign
materials) or inert.
Slurry samples or when test times are long the sample
skins over, bubbles up or splatters when the moisture
testing is running, we recommend using filter pads
with the moisture pans.
For testing liquids the pads are a must. Place
the moisture pan and pad on the moisture balance,
adjust the setting time to zero so the Ohaus moisture analyzer is in auto mode and run the test
with no sample on the pad. Many times the fiber
pads can hold up to 2% moisture and this preps the
pan and fiber pad to be moisture free and only takes
typically 1 minute with the MB35 moisture analyzer.
Now with the dry filter pads if you are working with
a liquidity substance 70% water or more place the
sample with an eye dropper, syringe or pipette is
a spiral pattern and then cover with the filter pad.
For slurries and anything with bumps and chucks like
corn slurry we recommend using two pads making like
a sandwich (bottom pad - test sample - top pad).
Place the pan on the moisture balance and then place
one pad on your table and then using a syringe or
spoon apply the sample to the pad in a spiral pattern
and now cover with a second pad. Slightly squish
the sandwich you just made to break up any chucks
and the filter pads will absorb the moisture.
Now place the two pads with your sample sandwiched
in-between and run your test. You'll find more
consistent and repeatable rest using the two pads.
Warning - Moisture balancesshould not be used on any volatile organic sample with flash
points. Even a MSDS rating of 1. Samples with low flask
points like Acetaldehyde -38°C or MEK -4°C should not be used
with the Ohaus MB35 Moisture Balance and maybe you should look at Karl
Fisher as an alternative.
Although you might presently perform analysis with an oven on these
samples the ovens typically have ventilation and a much larger cavity
than the typical moisture balance that operates on the principles of
TGA. In addition, with most moisture balances there is no ventilation
so all the fumes remain inside the hood of the moisture balance. We strongly recommend you consult with a safety
specialist always prior to using any moisture balances for your safety.

Have you seen the new Sartorius MA160 moisture analyzer? The MA160 offers a touchscreen display that is more intuitive for some people than the MB35. Watch the video above and learn how the MA160 can be configured, see the display and how to access the parameter configuration. You'll see all the steps to run a moisture test on the MA160. The Sartorius MA160 moisture analyzer has a "Software Assistant Function" to start the development of your our test method parameters. See step by step how to test ketchup
Watch this video above as we highlight in this video the differences between the MA37 and MA160 since briefly looking at the units they seem the same but there are major differences.
So both the MA37 and MA160 deliver readability to 1 milligram. The average repeatability is ± 0.2% when you are using an initial sample weighing from 1-5 grams and when using a initial sample greater than 5 grams the repeatability is 0.05%. We always recommend a sample at least 5 grams since anything smaller is typically difficult to attain a good representative sample. Neither unit is recommended for plastic resin applications.
So what are the differences??
Although the infrared heating element looks similar the MA37 maximum output is 480W while the MA160 is 600W. More watts shortens time to attain temperature setting. The heating elements differ from a different alloy mix for the metal tubular heating element and Sartorius calls the MA160 element AURI.
MA37 has only the ability to save one (1) method while the MA160 can save up to 100 methods.
MA160 comes with "Sample Tongs" while it is an accessory for the MA37.
MA160 includes 3 ReproEasy Pads while no pads are included with the MA37. The ReproEasy Pads are used to verify the moisture analyzer is functioning within manufacturer specifications. The pad is a onetime use consumable item and additional pads are sold in packages of 10 pads. We recommend you download the user manual and reference the section "MA Performance Test" to learn more about this test feature available on both the MA37 and MA160. This is a great alternative to testing your moisture analyzer against sodium tartrate dihyrate. Using sodium tartrate dihyrate requires you to operate at 160C to release the chemically bonded two water molecules from Sodium Tartrate. The ReproEasy Pad you can run a performance test at 70C, 100C or 130C whichever temperature is closer to your actual sample you test normally.
The MA160 has a SD memory card slot verses the MA37 just has a dummy slot. You can import/export methods to the SD card. This is a nice feature for companies that implement "build alike" or create SOP implemented globally throughout their plants. One plant can develop the method for each different sample, download those methods to the SD card and the e-mail the file to other plants where they can copy the file to the SD card and then import them into the MA160 located in other locations.
In the "Calibration Report" menu you can access the most recent calibration reports for the MA Performance Tests and external calibration adjustments up to 99 reports are saved per day. Calibration reports older than 30 days are automatically deleted. Again this information can be downloaded to the SD Card and the file e-mailed to the quality control or regulatory officer to meet compliance reporting requirements.
Another benefit purchasing the MA160 because it has the SD card is the "Results" menu. The analysis results can be viewed, exported or deleted. If you export the data to the SD card it is saved as an XML file and can be viewed with a web browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox. This is a great feature especially for paperless operations or if you need to print results and don't have a Sartorius YDP30 or YDP40 printer. All you need to do is save results to the SD card, open the file on your PC within a web browser and use the printer connected to your computer.
I would say the greatest feature the MA160 has that isn't available on the MA37 is "Method Assistant". Method Assistant helps you develop and refine methods in 3 easy steps. Its quick and ensures that all relevant parameters have been included for your moisture determination test. The Assistant prompts you to configure all relevant parameters, provides a practical range and prevents you entering implausible data. If you are running lots of different samples and not sure on the optimum temperature, whether you should use filter pad(s) The intuitive wizard asks you whether your sample consistency is a solid, fluid or paste. Method Assistant even asks if the sample is organic, inorganic or unknown.
Finally there is a 'Protective Mode" menu that is only available on the MA160. This allows you to password protect the MA160 moisture analyzer to ensure only authorized persons can make changes to the system settings. This video is a must see.
