Ohaus Scout SJX323N/E NTEP Approved 62,000d Class II Scale is brand new as of May 2016. When the security switch is placed in the locked position as required for legal for trade weighing the Ohaus SJX323N/E has a maximum weighing capacity of 64 grams and the display increments in 0.01 gram divisions. Weighing in carats the SJX323 can weigh up to 320 carats and increments in 0.1 carat divisions (0.1ct > 0.2ct > 0.3ct > 0.4ct). When the security switch placed in the unlocked position (also called NON Legal for Trade mode) the Ohaus SJX323N/E has a maximum weighing capacity of 64 grams and the display increments in 0.001 gram divisions and for carats 320 carats and and the display increments in 0.01 carats divisions.
If you are selling precious stones like diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires we really DO NOT recommend the SJX323N/E and although you might like the price of the Ohaus Scout SJX323N/E especially were it is Legal for Trade you really should save your money and buy the Mettler Toledo JS703C/A carat balance. When buying a legal for trade carat scale you really need better than 0.1 carat that the Ohaus SJX323N/E offers. The Mettler JS703 offers greater accuracy.
The Ohaus Scout SJX323N/E is a Class 2 Legal For Trade NTEP Approved Scale. The "e" (value of verification scale division) is 0.1 carats (0.01 grams). All this information can be verified by downloading the CofC # CofC 16-015
Weights & Measures Inspectors are suppose to follow the guidelines in Table 8 of section 2.20 Scales in NIST Handbook 44, 2.2 Theory of Tolerances in Appendix A for determining the applicable scale for the weighing application. You can download sections of NIST Handbook 44 - 2012 Edition here.
Table 8 says that the smallest item weighed on a class II scale with a verification scale division size of 0.01g should weigh at least 2 grams (20 divisions) - the SJX323N/E meets this description. So although you might be a jeweler thinking you could buy the SJX323N/E to weigh precious stones like a diamond following the guidelines of Handbook 44 you can only use the SJX323N/E for weighing diamonds over 2 grams or 10 carats (1gram = 5 carats).
The Theory of Tolerances states that the tolerance allowed on a commercial device should not cause economic injury to either the buyer or the seller. A class II scale with a verification scale division size 0.01 gram is allowed 1 division (0.01 g). In carats the verification scale division size is 0.1 carat is allowed 1 division (0.1carats). Again with the SJX323N/E the smallest diamond you should weigh needs to be at least 2 carats and if you are selling precious stones greater than 2 carats we hope you can afford something like the Mettler JS703C/A. If you are weighing a 2.9 carat stone and the scale recorded the weight as 3.0 carats there is a huge price difference thus creating "economic injury" and in our opinion not recommend for weighing finished precious stones.
So what application do we see selling the Ohaus Scout SJX323N/E for? Maybe people traveling the world buy rough semi-precious gemstones in the bush since they need a small portable battery powered digital scale. Other possibilities could be for scrap gold buyers weighing under the maximum weighing capacity of 64 grams for the SJX323N/E that need a legal for trade scale with a verification scale division equal to 0.01 grams to meets Minnesota Weights & Measures scale requirements for weighing precious metals. Also the selling of small quantities of legal medical marijuana although most medical marijuana dispensaries purchase the AND Weighing FX-300iN
If you were not going to be using the Ohaus Scout SJX323N/E for a commercial weighing application and DO NOT need a Legal for Trade scale then you are much better off purchasing either the Ohaus SPX123 or Ohaus SPX223 since these models cost less and offer greater weighing capacity.
Easy-to-use four-button operation along with a low profile housing measuring 8.8 x 8.0 x 3.5 inches while offering a large 3.7 inch diameter weighing platform are big selling points. Beware of other vendor's trying to sell you the Ohaus SP123 or TAJ203 as a carats scale since none of these models are NTEP Approved and they are discontinued models. Also other dishonest vendors telling you to buy the Ohaus SPJ Jewelry Scales like the SPJ303 since they have a special and a super deal. Do they tell you none of the SPJ models are at NTEP Approved and also the SPJ is discontinued and what is left for a warranty?? It is not worth playing games if you are using the scale for a commercial weighing application since Weights & Measures Inspectors are not going to let you use an Ohaus TAJ or SPJ and many times you can get a hefty fine for not using the correct scale.
Ohaus SJX323N/E uses a uses a Mettler Toledo 30254251 strain gauge load cell. If you downloading the CofC # 16-015 and look in the "Standard Features and Options" section you will see the Ohaus Scout SJX323 uses a Mettler Toledo 30254250 strain gauge load cell. The Mettler loadcell delivers superior weighing technology for fast repeatable, reliable weighing results with a stabilization time as fast as 1.5 second resulting in quick results and increased efficiency.
The large backlit LCD provides operators a clear view of their weighing results. The optional auxiliary display kit (Ohaus part # 30269019) is an affordable solution for those states specified by Weights & Measures Inspectors to have a secondary display so the customer can see in real time. Typical this is referred to as "Direct Sales" - both buyer & seller are present and the scale needs to be positioned in such a way that the scale is in full view and the scale display can easily be read by both parties. Always check with your local Weights & Measures Inspectors for exactly all the requirements you must meet since some inspectors follow the rule exactly while other inspectors are very lenient.
To seal the device, a wire security seal may be threaded through tabs in a sliding cover and the base housing on the bottom of the scale. Alternately, a destructible sealing label may be affixed to the sliding cover and the base housing. When the sliding cover is sealed in the locked position, access to the calibration switch inside the housing is prevented. Remote calibration and configuration are also blocked when the device is sealed.
The Ohaus SJX Scales also feature adjustable feet and level bubble to help level your digital scale to provide the most accurate weighing results.
Bright backlit LCD & 4 button keypad enables efficient operation and ease of use. The sprint leveling bubble located to the right of the display allows you to know whether your scale is level to deliver the most accurate weighing results. The Scout's large backlit display increases readability in low light working conditions, and is easier to view from a distance. The Ohaus Scout SJX323N/E features 3.7 inch diameter weighing platform with ABS draftshield. Scout's ingenious draftshield was designed with an easy to remove top cover piece. This serves as a wind protection ring which lessens external influences to the weighing platform, while maintaining weighing speed.
Learn how to calibration the Ohaus Scout digital scale. In the YouTube video above we perform a span calibration that uses two weight values: zero and a weight value at or near the digital scale's capacity. We don't stop here, we also walk you step by step how through the procedure for linearity calibration, which minimizes deviation between actual and displayed weights within the scale's weighing range. Three weight values are used: zero, a weight value within the scale's weighing range which is set to 1000g, and a weight value at or near the balance's specified capacity which is preset at 1500g for the SJX1502. The steps to perform calibration for the SJX1502N/E are similar for the SJX323N/E and various Ohaus Scout SPX, SKX or SJX models except the value of calibration weight used for calibration is different. The 50 gram span calibration weight is included with Ohaus SJX323N/E but the 30 gram & 60 gram weight required for linearity calibration are NOT INCLUDED but can be purchased at www.calibrationweight.com

The Ohaus Scout Scale is equipped with a weigh below hook for weighing below the balance. Before turning the balance over remove the weighing pan and platform support, place the transportation lock in the locked position to prevent damage. To use this feature remove the protective cover for the weigh below opening. The digital scale can be supported using lab jacks or any other convenient method. Ensure the scale is level and secure. Power on the Scout Scale, then use a string or wire to attach items to be weighed. Below weighing is used for weighing magnetic materials, large samples that won't fix on the weighing platform or extremely hot or cold sample that would effect the scale's electronics if placed directly on the weighing platform due to thermal heat/cold transfer. Additional applications would be specific gravity determination.
The Ohaus Scout operates on AC adapter (included) or 4 AA batteries (not included). There are four(4) adjustable feet to assist in leveling your Ohaus Scout digital scale.
The lockout switch can be used to lock out the Scout Scale to prevent configuration changes. This is required if the scale is used for a commercial weighing application. Your Weights & Measures Inspector will use a wire with lead crimp to prevent unlocking the scale.
The Ohaus Scout Scales have a red transportation lock on sub platform of the balance that needs to be disengaged before you start your weighing. Simply turn the red pointer 90° counter-clockwise.
The impact-resistant pan support safeguard against shock and overloading the balance in rugged and demanding environments. The Scout engineered with superior overload protection rated at 10 times the capacity of the digital scale.
