Air quality standards monitoring airborne particulate matter (PM) are based on gravimetric analysis of PM samples collected on filters and measured using an ultra microbalance filter balance. The Environmental Protection Agency has defined ambient air quality standards for particulate matter concentrations and created Federal Reference Method (FRM). Many of the tests require the mass differences less than 100 µg that must be correctly measured in gravimetric analysis of particles collected on filters and the Sartorius MSE2.7S000DF is the affordable solution.
Sartorius MSE2.7S-000-DF filter balance is the filter weighing solution for use in particulate emissions testing. This filter balance is ideal for measurements in research and testing institutes in the field of environmental technology – anywhere that the emissions produced by combustion processes are closely scrutinized.
Sartorius filter balances deliver high precision gravimetric measurement of particulate diesel fuel emissions involves a whole 21 million steps – this is the number of scale intervals in an ultra-microbalance designed for measuring the weight of microscopically small soot particles.
Reducing the level of emissions produced by vehicles that run on diesel fuel is one of the highest priorities around the globe for keeping our air clean. Automobile manufacturers have been steadily reducing the particulate emissions of private cars and commercial vehicles by optimizing the design of internal-combustion engines, whether through improvements to the combustion process or the addition of soot filters.
Sartorius has the ideal solution for this most demanding metrological task: the MSE2.7S-000-DF micro balance. The draft shield on the MSE2.7S000DF has been specially developed for weighing filters. Not only is it ergonomically for both left and right-handed users, it also meets the highest standards for cleanability – an essential feature when working with nano particles – thanks to stainless steel components that can be easily dismounted for cleaning.
The special draft shield design makes this model particularly flexible in use: it is perfect for weighing the 47-mm filters specified in the EPA regulation. And it does more than shield samples from drafts: it also provides excellent shielding from electrostatic charges.
Sartorius MSE display features black and white liquid crystal display with simple operation and easy user guidance. The weigh indicator control unit is detachable.
MSE2.7S-000-DF filter balance allows users to measure particle emissions in diesel fuel in accordance with 40 CFR 86.1312-2007. Weighing filters up to 50mm diameter with the standard weigh pan or purchase the optional optional weighing pans for 75-mm or even 90-mm filters.
MSE2.7S-000-DF filter balance offers a full resolution from 0.1ug to 2.1g, meaning no further adaptations are required to allow the balance to be used for this highly specialized application.
MSE2.7S000DF filter weighing balance is now being used by several of the world's leading automotive manufacturers, where it has been adapted for use with the customer's own software programs for data evaluation and storage. Emissions testing is important not only in the automobile industry but also in the petrochemical and oil industries, and the sartorius filter weighing balance is just as well suited to these applications. Moreover it can also be used in research and testing institutions in the field of environmental technology, or indeed anywhere that the emissions produced by combustion processes are closely scrutinized.
Additional application maybe for EPA Federal Reference Method(FRM) for measuring PM 2.5 are in the Federal Register (40 CFR part 50, Appendix L, section 8).
Stabilize readings within an ultra fast 10 seconds, for maximum time savings with each weighing operation.
The location of a microbalance is critical since environmental conditions can dramatically affect the weighing performance. Many people call us shopping for a microbalance and their only interest is what is the cost of the microbalance forgetting they might need a static eliminator and spend $1000's to change the location they planned on installing the microbalance. The higher the lab balance resolution or accuracy, the more care must be taken with environmental conditions.
Installation is always best on the ground level on a concrete foundation since installing the micro-balance on upper floor levels are more prone to the possibility of floor vibrations due structural motion and pedestrian movements. If you can't install your microbalance on the ground level installing the micro balance in a corner outside wall is the next best location. Always try to stay away from the middle of the floor since this area bends the most. Also the higher floor levels the balance is located, the greater the building sway and even slight misalignment along the vertical to the center of the earth can introduce substantial weighing error.
A high precision microbalance should always be installed in a low traffic area. Due to the expense of the micro balance it should be in a restricted area to lessen the chance of unauthorized people from touching or using the microbalance.
Install a ultra-micro and micro balances in quiet, temperature and humidity controlled, draft-free location is of paramount importance. Finding a location in cleanroom can many times be challenging due to laminar air flow. So before even considering purchasing a high precision laboratory balance you should consider the area you want to install the microbalance since if your environment is not ideal you don't have a defective microbalance but a defective environment. You can read more about selecting a location of your lab balance here.
A solid balance table or marble slab is recommended to eliminate the surface the microbalance is installed on to prevent bending and any flexing. The weighing table should also be decoupled from the environment with an additional layer of shock-absorbing material such as rubber or cork to lessen sensitive to shock and vibrations. Wooden tables have some degree of flexure and typically unsuitable to attain repeatable consistent weighing results with a microbalance. Marble tables should not only have a marble top but also marble legs and these tables typically weigh several hundred pounds and cost well over $1000 and installation and freight will also be costly. Please consider these issues are additional costs and many times required for the microbalance to perform to the capabilities of the precision weighing instrument.
Controlling temperature changes is the most critical environmental condition that you must control and has the most serious affect on the performance of your microbalance. Temperature effects of even a difference of 1°C can cause sensitivity and zero point to shift. Although some people might say zero point drift can be resolved by taring the microbalance sensitivity drift will introduce systematic error. Sensitivity drift for the Sartorius MSE2.7S000DF is stated at ± 1 ppm / K. " K " is parts per million per °C rise in temperature. So if the temperature changes by 1°C you can expect 1 microgram change. Since the MSE2.7 has readability to 0.1 µg just a 1°C temperature change will affect the microbalance by 10 divisions 1.0 µg. A temperature change of 1°C might not sound like a lot but if you placed a sample of 0.0000010 grams (one microgram) a difference of 1°C will affect the observed weight of 0.0000010 gram mass by up to 1 micro grams. So instead the the microbalance reading 0.0000010 grams it could display between 0.0000011 grams to 0.0000009 grams. That is a lot of error just over a temperature change of 1°C and the greater the temperature change the more significant the error.
