Ohaus Scout SPX123 is one of newest additions to the expanding line of the Ohaus Scout Scales. This is a economy entry level milligram digital scale is built using strain gauge weighing technology and offers 120 grams weighing capacity and increments in 0.001 gram divisions. Now just because the scale increments in 0.001 gram divisions DOES NOT mean it is accurate to 1 milligram. Ohaus states the repeatability as ± 2 divisions and linearity as ± 3 divisions. In other words the precision is ± 2 milligrams and accuracy is ± 3 milligrams and this is Ohaus testing the scale in the most ideal environment - perfect temperature, humidity, zero electronic noise interference, rock solid stable surface, perfectly level, etc so it would be extremely difficult for you to achieve those results.
Some people might say how can the SPX123 be priced so low? Again the SPX123 is built with a loadcell using strain gauge technology. Many people just don't have the money to spend for the higher quality and better performance found in a electromagnetic force restoration balance like the Ohaus AX223, Sartorius ENTRIS323-1S milligram scale or Sartorius Practum 213-1S milligram balance .
Ohaus isn't the only company now selling low cost milligram scale using strain gauge technology. MyWeigh has the GemPro250 scale and Adam offers the Adam Equipment HCB123 milligram scale which are both strain gauge loadcell scales. We even have our own EPB-103, EPB-203 and EPB-303 strain gauge milligram scales, but our best advice is DON'T buy a strain gauge loadcell milligram scale unless you absolutely have no money to spend for a quality milligram balance using electromagnetic force restoration weighing technology since strain gauge scales drift. Look Sartorius stopped selling the AY123 milligram strain gauge scale since they did not want to ruin their reputation for building the finest weighing devices in the world.
So if you are in a situation were you don't have the money to spend for a electromagnetic force restoration balance the Ohaus SPX123 could be the answer, but understand what you are buying. If you don't understand the difference between strain gauge and electromagnetic force restoration balance you should watch our video on youtube "Magnetic force restoration balance verses strain gauge digital scale" or "Strain gauge loadcell vs electromagnetic force restoration". A strain gauge can work fine for weighing static loads and you quickly take the weight reading and use the draftshield, but the numbers are going to start to creep if you wait too long and the scale will perform horrible if you are trickling gunpowder just forget it. I don't know how to stress it any more but buy electromagnetic force restoration balance and if you don't have enough money stay just wait until you can save more.

If price is absolutely the #1 issue and you are in search of the lowest cost 0.001g digital scales then we have a couple of other strain gauge digital scales that are made in China - the Ohaus SPX123 is also made in China. These milligram scales do not have all the bells and whistles included in an Ohaus SPX123, but the price is much less. For our customers seeking a simplified milligram digital scale, with less features we recommend our own EPB-103, EPB-203 and EPB-303 strain gauge milligram scales offering 100 gram, 200 grams, 300 grams respectively all incremental in 1 milligram divisions for much, much less money.
Bright backlit LCD & 4 button keypad enables efficient operation and ease of use. The sprint leveling bubble located to the right of the display allows you to know whether your scale is level to deliver the most accurate weighing results. The Scout's large backlit display increases readability in low light working conditions, and is easier to view from a distance. The Ohaus Scout SPX123 features 3.7 inch diameter weighing platform with ABS draftshield. Scout's ingenious draftshield was designed with an easy to remove top cover piece. This serves as a wind protection ring which lessens external influences to the weighing platform, while maintaining weighing speed.
Learn how to calibration the Ohaus Scout digital scale. In the YouTube video above we perform a span calibration that uses two weight values: zero and a weight value at or near the digital scale's capacity. We don't stop here, we also walk you step by step how through the procedure for linearity calibration, which minimizes deviation between actual and displayed weights within the scale's weighing range. Three weight values are used: zero, a weight value within the scale's weighing range which is set to 1000g, and a weight value at or near the balance's specified capacity which is preset at 1500g for the SJX1502. The steps to perform calibration for the SJX1502N/E are similar for the SPX123 and various Ohaus Scout SPX, SKX or SJX models except the value of calibration weight used for calibration is different. The 100 gram span calibration weight is included with Ohaus SPX123 but the 50 gram calibration weight required for linearity calibration is NOT INCLUDED but can be purchased at www.calibrationweight.com

The Ohaus Scout Scale is equipped with a weigh below hook for weighing below the balance. Before turning the balance over remove the weighing pan and platform support, place the transportation lock in the locked position to prevent damage. To use this feature remove the protective cover for the weigh below opening. The digital scale can be supported using lab jacks or any other convenient method. Ensure the scale is level and secure. Power on the Scout Scale, then use a string or wire to attach items to be weighed. Below weighing is used for weighing magnetic materials, large samples that won't fix on the weighing platform or extremely hot or cold sample that would effect the scale's electronics if placed directly on the weighing platform due to thermal heat/cold transfer. Additional applications would be specific gravity determination.
The Ohaus Scout operates on AC adapter (included) or 4 AA batteries (not included). There are four(4) adjustable feet to assist in leveling your Ohaus Scout digital scale.
The Ohaus Scout Scales have a red transportation lock on sub platform of the balance that needs to be disengaged before you start your weighing. Simply turn the red pointer 90° counter-clockwise.
The impact-resistant pan support safeguard against shock and overloading the balance in rugged and demanding environments. The Scout engineered with superior overload protection rated at 10 times the capacity of the digital scale.
