The location of a microbalance is critical since environmental conditions can dramatically affect the weighing performance. Many people call us shopping for a microbalance and their only interest is what is the cost of the microbalance forgetting they might need a static eliminator and spend $1000's to change the location they planned on installing the microbalance. The higher the lab balance resolution or accuracy, the more care must be taken with environmental conditions.
Installation is always best on the ground level on a concrete foundation since installing the micro-balance on upper floor levels are more prone to the possibility of floor vibrations due structural motion and pedestrian movements. If you can't install your microbalance on the ground level installing the micro balance in a corner outside wall is the next best location. Always try to stay away from the middle of the floor since this area bends the most. Also the higher floor levels the balance is located, the greater the building sway and even slight misalignment along the vertical to the center of the earth can introduce substantial weighing error.

A solid balance table or marble slab is recommended to eliminate the surface the microbalance is installed on to prevent bending and any flexing. The weighing table should also be decoupled from the environment with an additional layer of shock-absorbing material such as rubber or cork to lessen sensitive to shock and vibrations. Wooden tables have some degree of flexure and typically unsuitable to attain repeatable consistent weighing results with a microbalance. Marble tables should not only have a marble top but also marble legs and these tables typically weigh several hundred pounds and cost well over $1000 and installation and freight will also be costly. Controlling temperature changes is the most critical environmental condition that you must control and has the most serious affect on the performance of your microbalance. Temperature effects of even a difference of 1°C can cause sensitivity and zero point to shift. Although some people might say zero point drift can be resolved by taring the microbalance sensitivity drift will introduce systematic error. Sensitivity drift for the Sartorius CPA26P is stated at ± 1 ppm / K. " K " is parts per million per °C rise in temperature. So if the temperature changes by 2°C you can expect 2 microgram change. Since the CPA26P has readability to 2 µg just a 2°C temperature change will affect the microbalance by 1 divisions 2µg. A temperature change of 2°C might not sound like a lot but if you placed a sample of 0.000100 grams (a tenth of a milligram) a difference of 2°C will affect the observed weight of 0.000100 gram mass by up to 2 micro grams. So instead the the microbalance reading 0.000100 grams it could display between 0.000102 grams to 0.000098 grams. That is a lot of error just over a temperature change of 2°C and the lighter the sample the more significant the error.
