Mettler Toledo JL602GE is a legal for trade, NTEP Approved Class II digital scale and replaces the discontinued Mettler JL602-G/LA01. The Mettler JL602GE is labeled with the Coifs 15-017 and complies with the National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP). When a scale is used in a commercial weighing application it must be legal for trade in most states of the USA. Commercial weighing applications are when goods are bought or sold by weight. Examples of these weighing applications include jewelry or pawnshops selling/buying precious metals, specialty herbal stores selling teas and spices, smoke shops selling tobacco and even medical marijuana dispensaries. Always check with your local Weights & Measures Inspector that your business operates in for the specific scale requires. Just because a similar store like yours is allowed to use the JL602GE in another city or state selling goods by weight the regulation might be different for the city your business operates in.
The Mettler JL602GE jewelry scale has a maximum weighing capacity of 620 grams with readability to 0.01 grams and comes standard with the RS-232 interface. The RS-232 can be used to connect your Mettler JL602-GE to the optional Mettler remote display, Mettler printer, or computer (data acquisition software like Winwedge and the RS-232 cable are extra). Also included is the 500 gram external calibration weight to calibrate your Mettler scale.
The regulations for Legal for Trade scales vary throughout the country. The JL602GE comes with the calibration weight, but there are some states that require you to hire a local scale company to perform the calibration. It is kind of crazy since scale calibration are now all performed by placing a calibration weight on the weighing platform and the EPROM stores the calibration value. In the old days like 10 or 20 years ago calibration required adjusting potentiometers and shims but those scales are decades old. Regardless, there are some states that will not allow you to calibrate the scale and you'll have to pay a scale company anywhere from $75 to $300 just to calibrate the scale. Again check with your for Weights & Measures Inspector whether you are allowed to calibrate your scale and if not make sure you understand any calibration services are your responsibility. You can download the scale calibration procedure here. You calibrate the scale at the place of installation that the scale will be used at when you first put it into use.
Most states also require you to pay a fee to put the scale into service after the scale has been calibrated. This fee varies widely and normally to pay for the Weights & Measures Inspector to place their calibration weight(s) on the weighing platform and verify the scale is weighing accurately. The inspector will then lock out the scale so it can not be calibrated until the next inspection.
The JL602GE from Mettler has a maximum weighing capacity of 620 grams and the display increments in 0.01 gram divisions. The “d” (value of scale division) is 0.01 grams and the “e” (value of verification scale division) is 0.1 grams. The balance meets the requirements as a Class II weighing device as defined by Handbook 44 and complies with the applicable technical requirements of "NIST Handbook 44: Specifications, Tolerances and Other Technical Requirements for Weighing and Measuring Devices". All this information can be reviewed by downloading the Certificate of Conformance # 15-017.
For most Weights and Measures Inspectors “d” and “e” is always an interesting topic of question. The simple answer is that legally, “d” cannot be considered in a commercial transaction. The Mettler-Toledo JL602GE scale has d = 0.01 g and e = 0.1 g, then legally the scale is a 0.1 gram scale and will be tested and evaluated accordingly. “d” must display on the scale as distinct from all of the other digits, it can be bracketed, it can be grayed out, it can be a smaller font, etc. The Mettler JL602GE “d”is bracketed, example 28.3 grams,
Using a legal for trade scale is only part of the requirement. The scale must also be suitable to the application. You can assess suitability by two basic questions; What is the minimum weight of product to be weighed on the scale? What is the maximum weight of product to be weighed on the scale? The minimum weight will tell you the maximum allowed division size of the scale, the maximum weight determines the required capacity. The scale must normally read 20 divisions for the minimum weight to be sold over it.
1) You expects to weigh out medical marijuana at the counter in a range from 2 gram to 300 grams.
2 gram / 20 divisions = 0.1 grams / division
Capacity should be at a minimum 300 grams.
Since the Mettler JL602GE is legal for trade to 0.1 grams it would be suitable for the example above. But if you were going to sell less than 2 grams the JL602GE would NOT be accurate enough and we would recommend you purchase the A&D FX-300iN which is 320g x 0.001g with d = 0.001 g and e = 0.01 grams.
There is a functional limit on the scale’s division size, if the division is too small (like AND Weighing HR-60 60g x 0.0001g with d = 0.0001 g and e = 0.001 grams) and the environment in the store is drafty, noisy or there are a lot of vibrations then the scale will never settle down and will be ruled as unsuitable based on the operating environment by the Weights & Measures Inspector so you don't want to buy a weighing device too accurate. The inspectors will look at the requirements in the scale’s user manual when assessing suitability of the environment when it appears that the scale is not performing as it should.
Legal for Trade scales, the application and installation can get complicated and we always recommend you check with your Weights & Measures Inspector if they will accept the digital scale you finally select for your business. We would recommend you forward the Certificate of Conformance #15-017 before you purchase the scale so you know for sure if the digital scale is applicable to your weighing application.
The Mettler JL602GE meets the requirements of Washington State Cannabis Board i-502 (Initiative 502) laws and regulations has specified in their Weights and Measures Program Recreational Marijuana Regulatory Requirements flyer. The flyer states "The products you package and label for retail sale are subject to a net contents regulatory inspection. If you are packaging products in quantities of one ounce or less we recommend you use an NTEP approved Class II scale with 0.1 gram divisions or less". The Mettler Toledo JL602GE is an NTEP Approved Class 2 scale with "e" (value of verification scale division) equal to 0.1 gram division.
Mettler Toldeo SmartTrack is a dynamic graphic indicator (left side of the LCD) shows the amount used of the total weighing range. You can thus recognize at a glance whether the load on the digital scale is approaching the maximum weight capacity. This function is extremely useful if you use the tare function. When pressing the tare key you zero out the weight displayed, but many times you forget the total weight applied to the digital scale's platform. Although you can use the tare key multiple times the cumulative weight applied to the scale's weighing platform can not exceed the weighing capacity of the scale. The dynamic graphic indicator helps you prevent from overloading the Mettler scale and causing damage to the loadcell.
The new Mettler-Toledo JL602GE offers some new features over the discontinued Mettler JL602-G/LA01. The weighing platform has been increased to 6.3 inch diameter while the JL602-G/LA01 was only 4.7" in diameter. The ability to weigh below the electronic scale for specific gravity applications. The digital jewelry scale offers a stackable cover so if you have multiple scales you can stack them when not in use.
The Mettler Toledo JL602GE scale's display now shows "MT GREEN" if scale is switched off to standby mode. While in standby mode the digital scale consumes less than 1 watt of power (I guess the environmentalist have gotten to Mettler-Toledo or maybe Al Gore is friendly with Mettler-Toledo since digital scales do not consume a lot of electricity. In today's marketplace place a guess everyone needs to be power responsible. Hmm, doesn't Gore's home uses more than 20 times the national average?
If you download the user menu there are some other features like a service reminder, internal clock for date and time if you were outputting data and needed to comply with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). If you are printing out the weight on the optional Mettler-Toledo printer it will even print out the "temperature" the scale was unused in so I assume this means the scale has an internal thermistor, but if you download the Mettler-Toledo JL-G Jewelry Scales User Manual you can read more about this function.
Some of these functions really are not applicable to a jewelry balance or jewelry weighing requirements, but these features are included in the JL602GE since Mettler uses the same scale to sell to the laboratory and scientific marketplace under the model PL602E.

Below are images of the discontinued JL602-GLA01. The replacement - Mettler JL602GE is similar and we are trying to show you the optional remote display for reference.
Although the JL602-GLA01 scale is legal for trade, if you plan on doing something like selling jewelry directly to customers in your store, then you are required by weights and measures to have a secondary display that the customer can see in real time. Another example might be if you've ever bought meat from a grocery store, you know that when the butcher weighs out the meat, you and the butcher both have separate displays as the meat is weighed. This scale is legal for trade, but it is NOT "legal for direct sales" unless you buy the Remote display with backlight, cable length 6 feet for $99.00. FOR THE REMOTE DISPLAY, YOU MUST HAVE A METTLER SCALE WITH AN RS-232 INTERFACE.
