Mettler Toledo JB series Carat balances offer functions including percent weighing, parts counting, as well as standard weighing modes.  This legal for trade carat balance is NTEP approved making it a great prescription compounding balance.

Mettler-Toledo JB703-L-C/A is legal for trade, also known as "NTEP approval" for weighing in either carats or grams weighing modes.  The Mettler balance model JB703-L-C/A features external calibration and includes the 100 gram external calibration weight.  If you prefer automatic internal calibration we recommend you look at the JB703-C/A-F since it offers the same specifications, except features internal calibration that automatically recalibrates the electronic balance when temperature changes are enough to affect precision digital electronic balance's accuracy.

When operating in Non-NTEP mode the Mettler's JB703-L-C/A has a weighing capacity of 140 grams and increments in 0.001 gram divisions.  This is an extremely affordable milligram balance that comes with the external 100 gram calibration mass, RS-232 interface, and 3 door glass draftshield for stable and accurate weighing results.

Weights & Measures Inspectors require the accuracy of all the commercial weighing and measuring equipment used for serving consumers and businesses be Legal for Trade.  Some have a requirement saying a scale is suitable for its intended use if the minimum load which will be weighed on it is 50 measurement divisions or more.  A scale whose smallest division is 0.001 carat is suitable for minimum loads of 0.05 carats.  The Mettler Toledo JB703-L-CA fits the requirement since the balance increments in 0.001 carat divisions.

As the price of precious metals like gold, platinum, silver and rhodium keep raising customer complaints to weights and measures officials are on the increase.  The general public is calling complaining they are being short changed buying and selling by weight.  These complaints typically result in a Weights & Measures officials doing an inspection to verify the scale in use is Legal for Trade. Most pawnshops, jewelers and metals buyers know they need a Legal for Trade Type Approved Scale, but these inspectors are now requiring the weighing scale to have two displays to meet the requirements of "direct sales". In weights and measures terminology a direct sale is one where both the buyer and seller are present.  NIST Handbook 44 requires the customer to be able to witness the transaction and transaction information from a reasonable position in a direct sale application. Weight indications shall be shown on the customer’s side of the scale when used for direct sales to retail customers.  The way to achieve these requirements is to purchase the optional display shown above (purchase here).  The Mettler Toledo 72213564 remote display features a backlight.  The display plugs into the RS-232 port on the back of the balance and the cable length is 6 feet.  All Mettler JB and JL balances are equipped with RS-232 interface with the exception of the JL602-G/LA00 and JL6001-G/LA00.
