Mettler Toledo JB1603-C/A-F balances come with different options. Competing scale companies do not seem to know what the part numbers all mean, but we will break it down for you.
JB1603 is the model number of the Mettler Toledo gem balance, C suffix means JB1603 is part of the carat balance product line, /A means the balance is legal for trade, and -F stands for Fully Automatic
Calibration Technology also known as motorized internal calibration.
Mettler Toledo JB series gem scales have standard motorized internal calibration (Fully Automatic Calibration Technology - FACT). The rugged metal housing ensures
a long operating life and minimal
maintenance costs. The backlit
display ensures that results can
always be read clearly. As an added layer of protection each balance comes with a protective transparent cover made from Barex which covers the main housing of the balance.
The vibration adapter can be used to match your balance to the ambient conditions (vibrations, drafts at location). If you work in surroundings which are practically free from temperature fluctuations, drafts, and vibrations, select “StabLE”. On the other hand, if you work in surroundings where the conditions are constantly changing, select “unStAbLE”. For normal ambient conditions, select “UnivErS” (Standard). This is the factory setting.
These jewelry scales weigh units in grams or carats, and are legal for trade. Other functions include piece counting and percent weighing.
The Mettler Toledo JB1603-C/A-F is perfect for assaying gold and we describe the technique below.
Fire assay techniques are the most accurate way of determining gold and silver content in mineral samples. First, a small sample (typically, 0.5 to 1.0 gram) of the metal to be tested is obtained by cutting (or drilling, in the case of a bar). The sample is carefully weighed in a balance that is accurate to 0.0001 gram. In the fire assay procedure the samples are mixed with fluxing agents, including lead oxide, and 2 to 3 times its weight of pure silver, and fused at high temperature. The lead oxide is reduced to lead, which collects the precious metals. When the fused mixture is cooled, the lead remains at the bottom, while a glass-like slag remains at the top. The precious metals are separated from the lead in a secondary procedure called cupellation. The lead button is placed on a magnesia CUPEL in a furnace at 960-1000 degrees Centigrade. The last two steps are commonly performed together by wrapping the metal sample in a sheet of lead oxide and placing it in a cuppel made of BONE ASH and heating it in a furnace. The remaining metal button is then flattened by passing it through a rolling mill and then placed in a nitric acid solution. Any copper and silver is dissolved in the nitric acid and the remaining gold is carefully dried and weighed. Usually, in 14 Karat samples, the gold that remains at the end will weigh 0.25 to 0.50 gram. The karat of the sample is determined by the following formula:
Karat = Weight of Pure Gold x 24 / Weight of Original Sample
Please Note:
Mettler Toledo gold balances have long model numbers, and often times you see gold balances that look the same, but have slightly different model numbers. Below we have provided a chart that explains what these different characters stand for to eliminate confusion. When you purchase a Mettler Toledo jewelry balance from Precision Weighing Balances, we want you to know exactly what you are getting.

These complaints typically result in a Weights & Measures officials doing an inspection to verify the scale in use is Legal for Trade.
Most pawnshops, jewelers and metals buyers know they need a Legal for Trade Type Approved Scale, but these inspectors are now requiring the weighing scale to have two displays to meet the requirements of "direct sales".
In weights and measures terminology a direct sale is one where both the buyer and seller are present. NIST Handbook 44 requires the customer to be able to witness the transaction and transaction information from a reasonable position in a direct sale application.
Weight indications shall be shown on the customer’s side of the scale when used for direct sales to retail customers. The way to achieve these requirements is to purchase the optional display shown above (purchase here). The Mettler Toledo 72213564 remote display features a backlight. The display plugs into the RS-232 port on the back of the balance and the cable length is 6 feet. All Mettler JB and JL balances are equipped with RS-232 interface with the exception of the JL602-G/LA00 and JL6001-G/LA00.
The Mettler Toledo JB and JL Scales we offer meet or exceed the Class II or III accuracy requirements in accordance with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Handbook 44.
