When you talk to every "so called scale expert" many don't have a clue about the proper selection of which counting scale model best meets your needs. Many like to exaggerate on the counting scale's ability to count parts and will attempt to impress you with buzz words like 'internal counts a.k.a. counting resolution" and enhance APW Software that is suppose to solve all the problems in the world.
The first thing you need to understand is all manufacturer state specifications in "best case scenarios" and like every part you are attempting to count is uniform in weight, which isn't reality. If you are counting paper the paper can hold moisture, if you are printing on the paper one sheet can have more ink applied than the next piece of paper. Fabricated metal and plastic items can always have burrs or residual lubricant used in the manufacturing process. It is always best to use a larger sample size like 20, 25 or 50 parts verses 5 or 10 pieces to better adjust for variations in the parts you are counting.
Our successful selling of counting scale has always been "if the counting scale can't sense the sample weight then it can't count it" so look at the smallest graduation the counting scale increment and multiple this number by 4 or 5 for extra security and your count should be good. So the ECS-16LB increments in 0.0002 kg (equivalent to 0.2g). We like the metric system so 0.2g x 5 yields 1 grams. So if your part weighs greater than 1 gram (that's about the weight of a dollar bill) then the ECS-16LB will do the job, but you'll also have to remember this scale only has a weighing capacity or 7.5 kg or 16 pounds. The large 13.4" x 9.7" stainless steel platform features a 3/4" raised lip at the back of the weighing pan to prevent parts from rolling off the weighing platform.
Large removable stainless steel weigh pan for easy clean up. The scale design incorporates a 4 post platform for better weighing results especially with corner weighing. Many other brands are designed with only a single post in the center resulting in greater eccentric weighing errors. You can determine how much the eccentricity of the load will affect the weighing results on the scale by weighing the same weight at the corners of the weighing platform. Determining the length of cable, hose, chain & rope. One
might ask how could a counting scale determine the length? Measure
out 25 feet of cable > enter a part count of 25 pieces >
and now your counting scale will determine the feet of cable
on the scale. The ECS-110LB works great for counting 14/3 romex
cable typically used to wire homes.
Metal fabricator to count heavy parts weighing 1/4 of a pound
or greater. We really don't recommend the ECS-110LB since
although you can count parts and have up to 110 pounds on the
counting scale the weighing pan is only 13.4 x 9.7 inches.
So really unless you are counting parts that are extremely heavy
like lead weights for a scuba driver's weight belt then we would
say this model is impractical.
No matter what counting scale you purchase one thing is imperative
- the item you are counting must be uniform in weight.
In order for counting scales to count the scale must be able to
determine the average piece weight (APW). It is the responsibility
of the operator to tell the scale how many pieces of the same item
are on the weighing platform in the beginning for the counting scale
to compute the APW.
This is accomplished by hand counting out a sample
lot of 10, 25, 50, 100 pieces, placing them on the platform and
then pressing the Sample/Unit Key on the ECS Counting Scale.
One of the beauties of this counting scales is
you can set any sample size. You're not restricted to a factory
setting sample size of 5, 10, 25 pieces like comparable models on
the market. If you want to use a sample size of 57 pieces, and then
you count out 57 pieces, place them on the platform, enter 57 using
the 1-9 keypad and then press the Sample/Unit Key. Your counting
scale is now programmed to count away. Place a hand full of
additional parts on the platform and the scale will display the
piece count. It's easy, simple and fast saving your company
hours over manual hand counting.
The ECS Series also allows
you to manually enter the unit piece weight if you already know
the APW. Simply enter the unit weigh using the 1-9 keypad and then
press the "Unit Weight" key to store the unit weight.
This can be a huge time saving feature over competitor's models.
An example would be if you were a storekeeper for a plumbing contractor.
Your job is to kit up fittings and other hardware for jobs limiting
issuing any extra supplies. In all likelihood any extras would
simply disappear and the plumber on the job site would end up taking
these parts home for those midnight jobs after work and on the weekends.
If you know a 1/2" right copper elbow weight 18.1 grams versus
a copper 1/2" T fitting weighs 27.4g or a 1/2 copper end cap
weighs 7.1g you simply enter the value in and count away.
Time is money and the ECS Series will pay

Counting scales look at the weight on the weighing platform and
divide the weight by the number of pieces to compute the APW.
It's truly a simple process. You're just basically training
the counting scale that 1 widget that weighs say 25.4g is equal
to 1 piece.
Another issue to successful implement with any counting scale is
you must have pieces (widgets) that have a consistent weight.
No counting scale will ever work if there is a significant variation
in the weight of the widgets. How much error will be dependent
on how much the weight of individual pieces varies? The larger
the initial sample (say 100 pieces versus 10 pieces) the better
results the counting scale can provide since it averages out any

Platform size: 13.5 inch x 10 inch – lots of space to work with and to count. Competition offers a lot smaller in physical size.
Platform: heavy gauge stainless steel platter. Competition uses thin stainless cover that sits on a plastic platter.
Sub-platter design. The sub-platter is made from a die cast heavy duty and stiff aluminum die cast which is mounted right on the load cell. The bottom of the load cell is also mounted to a stiff aluminum die cast. Steel footings are then mounted right on the bottom die cast structure. Competition uses pressed steel sheet. They are cheaper and steel bends and will affect the scale accuracy. Many of them have the load cells mounted on a steel plate that sits on the scale bottom housing. Plastic footings are screwed into the plastic casing. This is a bad design because plastic flexes and produces counting errors. Your expensive component weight is only transferred to a heavy gage stainless steel, supported by stiff die cast aluminum sub-platter that is mounted right on the sensor. The bottom of the sensor sits on another aluminum sub-platter, and the weight of the component and the scales are transferred through steel footing to the top of your work bench. No costs are reduced in this construction.
Sensor: The ECS counting scale uses the most expensive and the most reputable German HBM load cells. The heart of weighing is the load cell, the counting accuracy is only as good as the sensor used. Competition may provide unknown brand sensors that cost less than ¼ as much. Cheap sensors have poor performance, giving you a “curvy” shape in counting accuracy instead of a straight hard linear resolution.
A/D processor or analog to digital processor. ECS Counting Scales uses the fastest US-made A/D processor. You get over 1.3 million internal resolution and less than 1 second display update time. The internal resolution is like a magnifying glass, a high internal resolution will help the scale see the additional one unit more or less that you have on the scale. It is also very important in capturing minute changes in weight or counts, many lower cost products will only use the software to lock the display, and when you put 1 small piece on the scale, it will not be able to detect the weight change. This is VERY BAD because if small amount of products are placed slowly or taken out slowly from the scale, it will not capture the change and just assume the previous weight or count.
The fast update is also important which is similar to running your Window XP on an Intel 286 processor. If you have all the time in the world, it is ok to buy from the competition, if not, this is the fastest you can buy.
